It is something almost every home owner gets to experience at some point or another; a busted water pipe. However, before you go running off to find your local plumber, there are a few tricks to help you deal with the issue on your own.
It's important to remember not to panic. To begin, turn the water supply off. Next, investigate to see where the leak is actually coming from. Is the pipe split, or is it something a little more minor? If you have copper piping, there are a few quick fixes for you:
Temporary Repairs
These are solutions that will allow you to run water until a professional plumber can assess the situation.
Jab a pencil point into the leak and break it off. Wrap the tube with electrical tape and smear some epoxy putty over the tape to ensure it holds. Let it sit for roughly a half hour and turn the water back on.
Wrap a piece of rubber around the pipe, over the hole. Use a C clamp and moderately sized blocks of wood to clamp the rubber in place. If they're available, hose clamps can be a great addition if applied around the rubber as well.
Don't have access to any rubber? Use a hose. Once again, clamp the hose tightly using the aforementioned methods.
Permanent Repairs
These ideas tend to take a bit more planning and time, but once you're done, you'll have yourself a permanent repair.
Install a clamp that has been specifically designed to fix leaky pipes. These items can be found at most hardware stores and have a rubber gasket permanently attached. Simply place the clamp over the hole and tighten.
Using a braided metal tube with compression couples, center the coupling against the damaged section and mark the water pipe one-inch from each end. Cut out the damaged section of pips and slide the couplings into place. Tighten the fittings and turn the water to on.
Each of these suggestions will help get you right back on track if you ever have the need. In a case where none of the above suggestions is appropriate, the best idea is to consult a professional plumbing technician. This method may actually end up saving you money in the long run while providing you with a service that is no doubt, a little bit more dependable.
